Charles Jesse Jones, known as Buffalo Jones (1844 – 1919), was an American frontiersman, farmer, rancher, hunter, and conservationist who cofounded Garden City, Kansas. He has been cited by the National Archives as one of the "preservers of the American bison". "Buffalo Jones' Forty Years of Adventure" is an account of the adventures of Buffalo (C. J.) Jones in western America from Texas to the Arctic Circle, describing his hunting on the great plains and in the frozen north; his capture and domestication of the largest herd of American buffalo ever in captivity, and his capture of muskox calves in the Barren Grounds of the Arctic; his lonely trip across the northern Rocky Mountains and his descent of the Yukon River to the Bering Sea. BUFFALO JONES needs no introduction to American sportsmen. "Colonel Jones, as he is by courtesy sometimes called," was a frontier settler in Kansas in the sixties and combined farming with the more lucrative pursuit of buffalo-hunting on the prairie. As the buffalo diminished in number, owing largely to the raids of such hunters as himself, "Colonel" Jones conceived the idea of rescuing some of the young calves from impending destruction and domesticating them. He hoped that besides perpetuating their species he might cross them with ordinary cattle and thus establish a breed that would better resist the fierce winters of the plains and possess some of the other valuable characteristics of the buffalo. With his efforts in this direction we need not concern ourselves except to mention that it was he who purchased the captive herd of buffalo at Stony Mountain, Manitoba, belonging to Major Bedson, in 1892. The last wild buffalo captured by " Colonel" Jones were taken in 1889.In 1879, Jones founded Garden City, the seat of Finney County in southwestern Kansas and was elected the first mayor of Garden City. In that capacity, he met such western figures as Wyatt Earp and Buffalo Bill Cody. He occasionally drove a team of buffalo calves through the streets of Garden City as a promotional stunt. Jones was the first member from Finney County to the Kansas House of Representatives. In the spring of 1886, alarmed about the pending extinction of the bison, Jones set forth from Kansas, toward the Texas Panhandle to find remaining animals. He lassoed eighteen calves and took them safely back to Kansas. Jones met the pioneer Tex as rancher Charles Goodnight, who was crossbreeding buffalo with cattle From 1886-1889, Jones accumulated. more than 50 head, including a buffalo herd he had purchased in Winnipeg, Manitoba, which required shipment to Garden City. From this herd, Jones sold animals to zoos, parks, or to other ranchers. In 1897-1898, he traveled to the Arctic Circle, where his party wintered in a cabin they had constructed near the Great Slave Lake. He captured five baby musk oxen, which were afterwards slaughtered by superstitious Indians. Jones' exploits of how he and his party shot and fended off a hungry wolf pack near Great Slave Lake was verified in 1907 by Ernest Thompson Seton.
